Bream Tail Beach House Mangawhai

A hidden escape from the city

A New Zealand beach house located within a heritage site surrounded by native bush, rolling sand dunes, rural farm land and panoramic views of the coastline. The central focus of this holiday retreat was urban escapism, family and the environment. A play on the traditional ‘Kiwi bach’, the beach house is responsive to its surroundings with a minimalist Japanese aesthetic.

Bream Tail houses a unique collection of art, vintage and retro furniture in keeping with the ambiance of the relaxed beach house. The design is an intelligent and practical blend of retro-cool meets sleek, with monochromatic accents, natural wood, comforting textures, sophisticated lines and innovative interiors. The finely honed detailing throughout this custom high spec scullery and kitchen features an electronic, tailor-made splashback of glass. This bespoke cabinetry and frameless window which opens at the touch of a button highlights views of the protected New Zealand native bush.

This projects success is attributed to the collaboration with the Clients, Architect Leo van Veenendaal from VRLA Ltd and Landscape                                                      Designer Trudy Crerar resulting in a sympathetically executed design project.
